Info

  • Discussion between teacher and student or between two students.
  • Duration: 10 minutes
  • Read the task carefully and try to remember the main points: What is the topic? What is the aim of the conversation?
  • Generally, five topics are given and you must decide on three (aim of the discussion).
  • Don’t point out if there is a word/concept you don’t know. Ask teacher or partner, maybe she/he knows it (e.g. How would you interpret XY? What does XY mean to you? Do you consider XY as a relevant point?)
  • Although the setting might be artificial, it is not a role-play. You are a student and your discussion partner is the teacher or the other student.
  • This does not mean you have to agree with everything the teacher or other student says. On the contrary, it is helpful for the discussion if you defend your own point of view. Try not to agree too readily.
  • Do not just answer yes or no. Even if you happen to agree, always say why. Claim your speaking time.
  •
  • If you have to address a difficult issue or something that is too personal, you could present the example as something that happened to a friend, or something that happened at another school.
  • The conversation does not consist of individual speeches! It is important to interact with your partner and show communication skills: React to what they say and refer to their arguments. Ask them about their opinion.
  • It is your responsibility to show a range of B2 language.
