The Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) exam, also known as the C1 Advanced, is a high-level English language examination provided by Cambridge Assessment English, a department of the University of Cambridge. The exam is targeted at non-native speakers of English who have an advanced level of proficiency and aims to test their ability to communicate effectively in English in a variety of situations. The CAE is recognized by universities, employers and governments worldwide as proof of advanced language skills.
The CAE exam consists of four papers: Reading, Writing, Use of English and Listening, and Speaking. Each paper is worth 25% of the total marks.
The reading and use of English sections are completed in one hour and 30 minutes. The reading section includes a variety of texts, such as fiction and non-fiction, and requires candidates to show their understanding of the main ideas, details, opinions, and attitudes. The use of English section assesses a range of grammar and vocabulary.
The listening section is completed in around 40 minutes. The listening section assesses a range of listening skills, such as understanding main ideas, details, and opinions.
The speaking section is completed in around 15 minutes with an interlocutor. The speaking section assesses candidates’ ability to communicate effectively in a range of situations.
The writing section takes one hour and 30 minutes. The writing section requires candidates to produce two pieces of writing, such as an essay or letter.
In order to pass the CAE, candidates are required to achieve a minimum overall score of 160 out of 200. The CAE exam is available in paper-based and computer-based format.
