Exam Information | Cambridge B1

The Cambridge English Preliminary (PET) exam, also known as the B1 Preliminary, is an intermediate-level English language examination provided by Cambridge Assessment English, a department of the University of Cambridge. It is aimed at non-native English speakers who have a basic to intermediate level of English language proficiency. The B1 Preliminary is recognized by universities, employers, and governments worldwide as proof of intermediate language skills.

The B1 Preliminary exam consists of four papers: Reading, Writing, Use of English and Listening, and Speaking. Each paper is worth 25% of the total marks.

🧾 The reading sections is completed in 45 minutes. The reading section includes a variety of texts, such as fiction and non-fiction, and requires candidates to show their understanding of the main ideas, details, opinions, and attitudes. 

👂 The listening section is completed in around 30 minutes. The listening section assesses a range of listening skills, such as understanding main ideas, details, and opinions.

👄 The speaking section is completed in around 12 minutes with a partner and an interlocutor. The speaking section assesses candidates’ ability to communicate effectively in a range of situations.

✍ The writing section takes 45 minutes. The writing section requires candidates to produce two pieces of writing, such as an essay or letter.

In order to pass the B1 Preliminary, candidates are required to achieve a minimum overall score of 120 out of 170.
